The reason it's becoming so common is because it's so darned gorgeous!

Alas I do have ties to all the the tartans except IOS, which is in the running because of what Bren said "It's so darn gorgeous". But the longer I take to decide the more cash I save.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. There's no denying it is a very attractive tartan. Arguably, entirely more attractive and colourful than the others presented. Maybe not as bright, which can be overpowering at times; but in its subdued, gentle colour scheme, the Isle of Skye tartan is both vibrant as it is rich.

I do like the IoS tartan, but as others have said, it's getting so common as to be passe. Yes, this is because it has universal appeal. But I have indeed seen pipe bands decked out in it, and it is quickly becoming just another generic universal tartan, which sort of takes the fun out of it (for me, anyway).

I LOVE that County Monaghan tartan! I can see where people would equate it with fall colours, but I rather tend to think that's based on an American sense of seasonal fashion. The colours are beautiful, and if it were me, I'd wear it all the time without giving a rip what others think. It has a nice earthy balance of hues which, I'm betting, would make it easy to blend in or stand out, depending on what else you wear with it.

Kyle: You should be selling tartan!

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I think we (collectively, not I) may see IOS as passé because we've seen so much of it here - because we pretty much all love it. I've yet to see an IOS out in the wild around here. Yes, some pipe bands may wear it, but I think that generally if any one of us were to wear it out in the wild, most (all?) people we might run into would find it to be a gorgeous tartan, and not at all dated.

That said, I think it's clear what my opinion is - and IOS is next on my list, once I decide whether to make it a 4yd box or 6+ yd knife.

If you have ties to Monaghan County I'd do that, next would be Fraser, assuming you have family ties there.

My thoughts exactly! Although you didn't list as an option, I like the Fraser Ancient Red....

There's a little chuckle that goes around the forum calling the Isle of Skye tartan "X-Marks Hunting."
