I was on a pipe band trip to the US circa 1978 and when visiting Virginia Highland Games, which I seem to recollect was held in Alexandria; there was a bloke there who claimed some sort of position in a Scottish clan whilst at the same time being the chief (or something like that) of a native Indian clan/tribe.
I can still picture him wearing the kilt, sporran etc. but for headdress he was wearing a native Indian get up/warbonnet with loads and loads of of feathers. Looked quite bizarre.

You mght be thinking of Waldo E. McIntosh, Jr. His father immigrated to the US from ascotland and married a Creek princess. Not sure about his authority within Clan MacKitosh but is (or was) the hereditary chief of the Creek people.

Creek Chief Waldo Mackintosh was descended of an illegitimate son of William Mackintosh of Borlum. Waldo visited Scotland in full Creek garb but did not mix his heritages, at least in his dress, while he was in Scotland.
