In the UK, we hide our fire hydrants underground, covered by a heavy cast-iron plate.

...if only we'd thought to do the same thing with our politicians...

Burying politicians has an unfortunate negative connotation except, I'm told, in New Jersey.
'A damned ill-conditioned sort of an ape. It had a can of ale at every pot-house on the road, and is reeling drunk. "

So, would an ad for said candidate be a "plug" for the hydrant?

His name comes from the fact that they used to be called fire plugs. This is because water mains were hollowed out logs and holes were chopped in them with an axe when water was needed for a fire then plugged after wards and firemen of old would remember where the plugs were to avoid making more holes.

In this opinion, the displayed and many other fire hydrants would make admirable mayors.

    - Always ready to serve their constituents
    - Not looking for favour
    - Requiring little maintenace
    - Rarely found guilty of wrongdoing
    - Strong, upstanding, visible
    - Examples to other politicians of how to conduct themselves

    Don't forget:
    - an iron-clad constitution (with a heart of, well, brass ...)
    - eminently adaptable
    - tireless in the performance of their duties
