I'm sorry to say, but I think it is commissioned work by someone just want that item in their collection and pays for it.

It's sad that someone would steal a national treasure. But frankly, I'm amazed someone got away with it. The Abbotsford I remember had some very low-tech, sharp-eyed Scots security. Years (and years and years) ago, I visited Abbotsford as a college student. Rob Roy's sword, if I recall correctly, sat prominently on a display table. Being a history student, a Rob Roy fan (and a beginning fencer), I couldn't resist. Almost by instinct, my hand reached out for the sword's hilt. Just before I picked it up, a voice snapped: "Don't do that!" A little man with a big frown reminded me that I was in a museum and that touching exhibits wasn't allowed. Chagrined, I apologized. But I went on to get a terrific tour from those sharp-eyed - and knowledgable - staff members.

As someone with MacGregor ancestry, I'm particularly crestfallen to hear this terrible news.
