An interesting side note to the 53 remake, entitled King of the Kyber Rifles, is that it was filmed in the Alabama Hills in nearby Lone Pine, CA. The city (well, small town!) up on Highway 395, on the backside of the Sierra Nevada range in CA has hosted hundreds of film companies. Even parts of Star Wars were filmed there. And, of course every Gene Autry and Roy Rogers movie has portions of the mountain range in the backdrop. The town provides a very nice tour booklet so as you drive through the Alabama Hills you can stop at famous film locations. The Hills are a fascinating geologic formation and it's a very interesting place.

Thanks for the reference to this movie, which I hadn't seen before. I got to watch it on Youtube yesterday evening and quite enjoyed it. It was fun to see the bass drummer in the pipe band twirling his sticks (flourishing) the way all good bass drummers used to when I was a young piper forty-some years ago. I recall one grade 1 bass drummer in Ontario whose moves were amazing. He was in constant motion and could even throw the stick around behind his back and hit the drum on the opposite side without missing a beat. I miss that level of showmanship, although I must admit that the now usual bevy of attractive young females twirling tenor drum sticks does rather make up for it.
