YOJiMBO20, you may be right about two different colors on the front and back. My pipe band's kilt has this issue. It's mainly blue on the front apron, but it's pleated to the double red stripes on the back which gives it a blue vs. red appearance when standing still.
A band in the area, UC Riverside, has the same thing. Except instead of red, the backs of their kilts are gold. If they had pleated to the blue block, the whole thing would look better, IMO.

MacGrioghair , the pic you have shown of the pipe band is why I decided not to pleat to the stripe on the Montgomery tartan ... not that it's bad or wrong ... just too much red on the back of the kilt considering the tartan ... at least for my taste .
Thus , I can understand your concern about pleating the MacGregor to the white stripe on an 8 yd knife pleated kilt . It will give the back of the kilt quite a bit of white ... not to the degree of the red in the band kilt ( as the MacGregor is a single white line as opposed to a double red in the band kilt ) ... but it will still have a white line dominance .
For what it's worth , I would offer the suggestion of pleating to another vertical element or to a block . This would give the kilt a nice contrast from front to back without being " color dominant " on the pleat / back side .
Cheers , Mike

Pleated to any stripe, from the back, the kilt could be any tartan. Have it done to the sett so there's no mistaking your clan affiliation. Show your pride!

KiltFitz, I actually like the look alot. It is quite a bit of white in the back, but it's not too over-bearing for my taste. I find its got a rather sophisticated appearance. Thanks for the picture!

Pleated to Stripe?
I think that the kilts shown pleated to the stripe are very nice looking. But, I can't help but wonder, would they make my butt look larger?
Have a happy holiday season, everyone.

Yes, there is a significant risk of that. For example: I am only 8 stone but my bum looks like that of a much larger man in this kilt.
