Yes when I saw them at North Berwick and Glasgow Green they looked like this, with Balmorals.

Google and you'll see a load of photos showing the above uniform.

Far fewer photos showing Glengarries, like this (note the dicing is red and white, not Lovat)

I'm not sure that's the reason, there is a Senior NCO far right of picture who is wearing a maroon/white diced glengarry.

The chaps with the lovat dicing are wearing pipers plaids in Douglas tartan whereas the maroon blokes are wearing plaids in the Omani Regiment 2nd Pipe Sqn.

Not sure about the connection to the Douglas Tartan other than it is the Regimental tartan of the Cameronians (The Scottish Rifles) and Wiki says "His Majesty ... Sultan Qaboos bin Sa'id Al 'Bu Sa'id; ruler of the Sultantate of Oman; served with the Cameronians in Germany in 1964 after completing his officer training at Sandhurst".

I'm assuming the difference in head dress reflects different Squadrons, Battalions or different Regiments that comprise the band, although I don't know for sure.

thanks for posting that photo, it makes it all fairly clear, that we're dealing with different units.

BTW the band I heard in Scotland in 2007 had impeccable deportment as is fitting a Royal band, and solid musicianship as well (they placed 4th at North Berwick, 5th at Bridge of Allan, 6th in Worlds qualifying, and 1st at Melrose).
