I have several PV kilts, some of which have very much a woolen look and feel (a couple of them actually do contain a little wool), and others which closely resemble a slightly heavy, tightly woven cotton or cotton-polyester twill. The latter are the ones I favor for really hot weather, of which we usually get a lot here in the US Midwest. They are very comfortable for that--definitely more so than pants and arguably more so than shorts--due to the extra "ventilation" provided by a kilt's open, unbifurcated design. And as Theridion notes, their easy-care quality make them a practical choice as well.

If you are comfortable in wool, I would recommend against the PV. Unless you intend to do athletics and want something machine washable, then I think you might be disappointed with the feel of PV if you are used to wearing wool. I was.

After looking at the rest of the responses, it appears I am different. I do not find my low yardage wool kilt to be any warmer than my old PV (which I got rid of, incidentally). Let's be honest, when it is truly hot out, it's hot in anything you wear. Wool doesn't bother my legs either.

    Just my 2 cents.

You're not alone ST, I'm on your side. Got rid of all my PV and Acrylic kilts. I prefer by far my wool kilts. I have one PV kilt left and I thought to use it to play paintball. (it's the only reason why I didn't try too hard to sell it)

Fabric preferences, like any other opinions, are personal, so I can only speak for myself. I find PV to have a smoother hand than wool, and thus to be less scratchy. Both are about equal in terms of their heat retention. I do like my semi-traditional PV kilt for warmer weather, because of the smoother hand (and ease of care), but it's not substantially cooler than wool.

With that said, I have no problems at all with good quality PV as a kilt material - I think it looks and feels fine - and find it preferable to wool if the activity is likely to be grubby or messy, simply because it's easier to care for.

What a great read! Absolutely fantastic job done by TartanHiker - I don't think anyone will want to replicate the experiment, but all the details are there - so it definitely can be done again.

Thank you, Benning Boy, for bringing this to our attention. Lots of good stuff in the archives...
