When I flew from Victoria BC to Calgary at Easter, I used my usual "bum bag" sporran. I took it off to pass it through the scanner with no issues at all. I left my kilt pin at home for the trip though. The airport security staff thought it looked cool, and I didn't get any hassles at all.

Last month, when I flew from Sacramento to Seattle, the sporran was no problem. Security was more interested in my kilt buckles ("No, they don't come off. They're sewn in." response to security)than my sporran chain. Next time I fly, I will wear my Bear Kilt and eliminate the hassle.

I just arrived in Alaska a couple of days ago from my current abode in Japan.
I wore my kilt with a sporran. I didn't wear a kilt pin.
I put the belt and sporran through the xray machine but still had to be wanded because the buckles set off the metal detector. No problems though.

Are you happy to be back home for a bit? Whatever happened with the fires that were near Fairbanks recently? Did you folks have to evacuate at all?
I would guess that you guys (and gal) in Alaska have the view to beat for the northern lights.

The fires have abated somewhat, or at least it is less smoky. It has been the secont worst fire year since they started keeping records in 1957. It is over 4 million acres statewide now. We went to our cabin thsi weekend, both men kilted and handsone. I will post some pictures of them later.

tell you what, if they ever gave me grief over a thing like that (buckles) I would just take the kilt off and put it through the scanner. (even if I was Bear underneath!!!)
It annoys me that decent people are inconvenienced by minor details while governments make huge oversights and blunders.

The problem is they would probably then arrest you for indecent exposure! It kind of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation!
What's a person to do?

Come on Daneel, get real, have you stopped for a moment to consider the devastation that could be caused by a buckle??
I trust our governments, if they deem buckles to be a dangerous weapon, then who am I to disagree??

Glad to hear you guys have gotten a bit of a reprieve from the fires for awhile. Vancouver is covered in haze from a fire in Bella Coola (300km away).
