All of this begs what has become a nagging question for me: why don't some of the kilt jacket manufacturers just bring in some summer weight material and put some summer weight jackets into production? I know that some things are only cost effective when there's an economy of scale…buying miles and miles of black barathea must bring the price down…but since a significant part of their market lies in countries outside of Scotland where the summer months bring temps in the upper end of the Fahrenheit scale, you'd think that they'd take advantage of the opportunity to make a few bucks by slipping some poly or linen into the pipeline.

My solution was to think outside the Highland box. I noticed that a lot of on-trend men's blazers and sport coats are cut quite short in the waist, and so I went down to Forever21 and found a 1/2 lined cotton one that works with the kilt. Stores like H&M or Topman also carry these sorts of "slim cut" jackets.

The key to having this look smart—and not like a hot mess—is to get a jacket that doesn't cover the pleats and has a bit of a cut away for the sporran. If it does not have these features, then a trip to the tailor or DIY can fix it, which would be easier than a longer, older style of jacket.

Here's mine, which has a matching waistcoat/vest (not shown here). The set was about $100 altogether, no alteration necessary. Note that the jacket does not interfere with my sporran:

Here's the back. The fell of my kilt ends at the yellow line just visible at the bottom of the jacket. This is where the pleats start—and heaven forbid that anyone would willingly interfere with the swish and swing of those pleats

The only problem I've had with the jacket is that cotton wrinkles quite easily

CMcG....that makes too much sense I guess and you do look sharp. Cotton/linen will wrinkle but it beats heat stroke by a mile.
I'm going to look for some inexpensive lightweight sport coats and if they look good wear them, if not have them tailored up a wee bit.

I need a bit of classy day wear in my life lol.
