Well not quite. Normally I would have agreed with you completely as I have worn Cheviot hose for shooting and kilt wear for a good many years with complete satisfaction. They have lived a hard life and have lasted well.

However, I am sad to report that this is not the case with Cheviot "Argyll" style hose. I had need of a pair a month or so ago and when ordered they arrived promptly and fitted perfectly over the foot and over the ankle, but further up the leg and particularly over the calf they were uncomfortably tight. By that I mean, 20 seconds was too long and thus impossible to wear. Now, I have never had any trouble with any other sort of Cheviot hose and whilst I suppose that I do have quite a large build, I can honestly say that I have never had this sort of trouble before , particularly over my calves. In fact I put on a brand spanking new pair of plain claret Cheviot hose yesterday, with not a problem.

I must finish by saying that the merchant promptly repaid me for the returned hose without so much as a quibble. Interestingly, he said that all the Cheviot " Argyll" style hose were made to those rather narrower dimensions. Be warned.

Thanks for the heads-up Jock. I, too, have never had problems with the fit of Cheviot hose, and me with my huge 18" calves.

BTW I just went on the Cheviot site and couldn't find the "Argyll" hose, either with their Kilt or Country lines.

    OCR.

On reading your post I googled " cheviot argyll kilt hose" and there appear to be pages on the subject. "Scotweb" were at the top of the page, so I had a look there and indeed Cheviot argyll hose are available. Hope this helps. It was in fact Scotweb that I dealt with and their service and sense of fair play is in my experience, beyond reproach. I should also add, that they were unaware of my connection to xmarks.
