Practice Kilt done, Time for the Real Thing

Finally got the book "The Art of Kilt Making" and had a relatively successful practice run with an inexpensive non-tartan wool, so it's time for the real thing now. Here are the results so far...

    Ready to go

Pleating done and basted. Off to cut the pleats now

The pleats are cut, one little mistake, I started cutting the button hole pleat like all the rest. Caught myself early and stitched it up, it will be hidden so I don't see a problem

    Stabilizer in and canvas attached

Now just finishing the edges, waistband, the straps and lining.

    Very nice McG.
What kind of sewing machine do you use? or did you sew by hand? I need a hobby. Thinking about tinkering around making a kilt. My wife says I should learn to sew first. She does have a point.
    Cheers

You don't need a seweing machine. If you get the book "The Art of Kiltmaking" learn how to make a kilt and all stitches you need. And what is sewing? Bringing a needle up and down through a piece of cloth.

You can order the book here: http://www.celticdragonpress.com

With the Black Watch plaid, I need very good lighting to see what I am doing. That looks great Bert!

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Kristof is right, like any skill it just requires practice so don't invest a lot in expensive fabric on your 1st attempt. This one is sewn by hand except for attaching the waist band, just a simple straight stitch so any machine would do. Get the book "The Art of Kiltmaking" you can't go wrong

I almost always press the pleats in before sewing, as then they are flat.

When you pressed the pleats after sewing, did you use a ham? I suspect you did not and the slight distortion your eagle eye sees is due to the pressure of the iron being in conflict with the curve of the garment. It really is a most excellent kilt, and no one would ever think that it was the second one you had made.

It really is very slight but you might consider doing the pressing in of the pleats before the sewing in future, as after that is done you need only a light pressing, or even a shot of steam just to take out creases rather than putting them in.
