Great to see a unique working-cantle sporran with real character.

Well Gentlemen, I am please you seem to like it!
I wanted it to look bit old and worn, not new, no sharp edges on leather or anything. To me it makes a big difference.
Reiver put it well,.........."Like an old friend" I think that sums it up!
Orianson,
As it is really my only sporran, I don't want to part with it right now, but if you could wait until winter, I could maybe make you one something similar.
(I never have made the same thing twice, close maybe but never the same!)
Farm work is a struggle already so can't commit until after freeze-up.
Mookien,
Yes, it's my first sporran. I had a modern thing and it had no character. I wanted one that looked like great Grandad had used it all his life!...yet wanted to try a non-traditional cantle (wood) and see if I could make it look plausible.
The gun-case was old, and even the "new" leather used for the gusset was some that "Aunt Floss" used for her glove-making, and she died in 1950!
Clasp;
Yes it has one. The nob in the top centre of the cantle is spring -loaded, and must be pulled up to withdraw a 'bolt' that fits into a slot in the rear part of the cantle .
Said bolt is tapered one way, so will just snap shut on its own without having to pull up on knob again. If I get a minute I will take a photo of it for you.
Again, thanks for the replies and pleased that a wooden cantle can seemingly 'fit in"!!
Richard.

Thank you most kindly, for your offer to make one for me when the snows come. I am more than happy to patiently wait. Do you have any of the gun case oak and Aunt Floss's leather left?
Your sporran is intrinsically beautiful on every possible level in my view. You achieved everything you set out to in a very admirable way. I love the fact that the interior is "unfinished", to use your word. I prefer organic, or in the rough. It adds greatly to the homespun feel of the whole.
I would be delighted and honoured to make one of your sporrans part of my heirloom kit.
Once again, thank you.
Orionson

Richard: I can relate to that. I only wear modern sporrans, because I have no character. And I'll bet you made your great Grandad and Aunt Floss smile.
That sounds like a simple, but clever clasp. I would like to see it sometime. Thanks.
John
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Our good Orionson just led me to this thread. Lovely piece!
Unique, personal, and it looks very well made.
A real beauty, I'd love to see some action shots!

Thanks again Chaps.
OC,
As you are someone who really knows his onions, I value your opinion on this! Pleased it sits well with you.
I must say I am a bit surprised that not many wooden cantles are made. to me, it seems logical, but of course I was brought up outside the Highlands so maybe it is then easier to think outside the box, But!... Make it Look like it fits Inside "The Box"!?!
Tenmiles;
Just have at it.. do your thing :-)
Artificer,
A compliment from you on a sporran is an honour, as you do such lovely work!
Can I ask what you mean by "Action shots"??
Richard.

Great job! I had planned on doing a wood cantle also. A very good look.

Beautiful workmanship!!
I am planning a wooden cantle, but am intending to laminate the curve, possibly using veneers of contrasting colour.
