If they're setting up the distillery now, the whisky won't be ready for consumption until 2022 if my math is right. It's got to age at least 7 years, doesn't it?

Great news. The wife and I really enjoy distillery tours and have managed to get in at least two every year when we go stalking. We stayed at a wonderful estate when we stalked Gleanntromie 2 years ago that was about 200 yards from the Edradour distillery. Touring a distillery always makes their whisky seem extra special. You have seen the craftsmanship and met some of the fine people that made the magic happen.

    Alex, et. al.,

What is the relationship, if any, between the scotch distillery planned for your home town and the R&B internet effort to determine in which town to site a distillery? See ...

    http://rbdistillers.com/2015/07/the-big-question/

Are these one and the same? At first glance they appear to be two distinct efforts. Thanks.

The R&B thing appears to be a rival project. Notice the one town they don't allow you to choose is Hawick. That's probably because they are aware that someone has already beat them to the idea of distilling whisky in Hawick. If someone else hadn't already come up with the idea I doubt R&B would have bothered. We might not have had a distillery here before but there was already a blended whisky as Turnbull's is a Hawick company.

Alex: Thank you for the reply. When I went to the R&B web page, I was indeed surprised that Hawick wasn't on the list. I assumed it was simply because nobody in the U.S. knows how to pronounce Hawick correctly.

I voted for Peebles, because I hope it will help all the peebles of Scotland. Furthermore, my brother told me that the community of Peebles was the closest of the 5 towns to the Clan Douglas homelands.

One question: With two new distilleries in your area, are there enough local folks available and with the skills to staff both sites?

All this writing about whisky has made me thirsty. Now for a dram of Sheepdip. You don't happen to know where that is distilled, do you? It's one of my favorite blends.

There are plenty staff available, but whether there are enough with the relevant skills would be interesting as there seems to be a craze at the moment for new distilleries springing up all over Scotland. Only a few days ago I was reading about another proposed distillery start up in Edinburgh.

Hawick distillery project secures £10m investment

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...tland-34871775
Plans to build the first distillery in the Scottish Borders in almost 180 years have taken a major step forward.
The Three Stills Company has announced it has secured funding of £10m to support its plans to establish a distillery in Hawick.
It has acquired a disused industrial site in Commercial Road and it expects to submit plans for its redevelopment early in 2016.
Existing buildings will be converted and a visitor centre will be created.
The firm, which already produces Clan Fraser whisky, claimed the venture could boost tourism and create new jobs by tapping into the existing skilled workforce.
Its directors said they wanted to uphold the "rich industrial tradition" of the region, which has been a centre for textile production.
John Fordyce, who is also the project leader, said: "The historical context was one major factor in us identifying Hawick, but so was access to natural resources and raw materials.
"There is a plentiful supply of pure water which the mills have depended on for cashmere and tweed production.
"It's one of the reasons behind Hawick's reputation for quality manufacturing.
"We also have on our doorstep what is undoubtedly Scotland's most fertile barley-producing land."
Funding for the project has come from private investors including the Duke of Buccleuch and Edinburgh-based investment company Badenoch & Co.
Its owner, Malcolm Offord, will become chairman of The Three Stills Company.
He said "We have a blue-chip group of investors, all of whom have an interest in or direct link to the Scottish Borders - I look forward to helping the management team deliver another boost to Scottish manufacturing and export".
The firm is the latest in a series of companies to express an interest in establishing a distillery in the region.
Last year, Mossburn Distillers unveiled plans for a £40m new distillery south of Jedburgh.
It was hoped the scheme could create 50 full-time jobs with more than seven million bottles a year produced at the site.
And earlier this year a competition was launched by R&B Distillers to allow the public to select the location for a new distillery which would be the first in the Borders since 1837.
Worth noting also that one of the co-funders is Richard Scott, Duke of Buccleuch, and Chief of CLAN SCOTT.
