Here's my 4 yd box made by John.

    I'm sure you'll love yours.

I love mine! For what it's worth, the hose in the second picture are also from John.

Love the box pleat photos, but...

I love the photos of the box pleats, above. However, I just wanted to say that I bought a Burnett's and Struth 5 yd casual kilt from a fellow XMarker a while ago and I love it. Most (non-XMarks) people can't tell the difference between it and a full tank. Since it is also lighter than a full tank, is also noticeably easier to wear for long periods such as a day at the Games. Pleating choices aside, a lower yardage kilt can therefore make very good sense.

    And, enjoy your new kilt!

Well alright many of you like your box pleated kilts, but somehow I cannot escape the thought that they look like school girl skirts of the 1950's. They looked fine on the girls, but I am not really convinced that the box pleat is the best option for the men. Just offering another viewpoint, nothing more.

Interesting, Jock, because here the girls wear only knife-pleats.

I can't really say that I have taken much notice recently. Maybe they do here more often these days, Bill. Although my grand daughter looks very smart in her tartan box pleated school skirt.

I have to say I'm sort of in Jock's camp on this one, not because of the school-girl thing (which hadn't occurred to me) but because up until I joined this site I'd never heard of or seen a "four yard boxpleated kilt".

It's not something that existed in the Traditional Highland Dress I saw around me, from the 1970s when I first started playing pipes and wearing kilts, up until I joined this forum a few years ago. Kilts were kilts: they had 8 yards, loads of pleats, were handstitched, were made of traditional kilting cloth. Utilikilts and casual kilts had not yet been born.

The "four yard boxpleated kilt" is a revived thing, rather than a traditional thing, and an American thing to boot, I do believe. Wasn't it Matt Newsome who went back into the beginning of the 19th century and revived a style of kilt which hadn't been made for nearly two centuries?

In many ways it's like people wearing Great Kilts nowadays not as part of a historical costume but part of their ordinary modern Highland Dress, something seen far more often in the USA than elsewhere.

Which is not to say that there's anything wrong with a "four yard boxpleated kilt". Not at all! I find them interesting. I think I've ever only ever seen one or two of them, at our local California Games. They do stand out from the crowd.

Well OC, you have seen my 4yd box pleat Isle of Skye kilt before and here is the proof. Actually I am wearing it this morning too as I am going to a Sea Music Festival at the Maritime Park where I volunteer in just a few minutes.
