    on the hip

At our local masonic meetings, the sporran goes to the hip to make room for the apron. Seems to work well.

And it's not just for musical instruments or Masonic aprons- there's a vintage (1930s?) article I read somewhere in which the recommend moving the sporran to the side while dancing. (I think they're talking ballroom dancing.)

To me, it would make sense for Highland dancing as well. I always pity the males... it must be annoying to have that thing bouncing around (if I'm kitted up for band, the sporran comes off before any dancing happens), but especially WHERE it is bouncing must be just adding insult to injury (or maybe it's the other way 'round, in this case).

I made the mistake once (!) of keeping my sporran in place while highland dancing. Never again.

    Same with running.

I always do that for the social dancing on Burn's Night. Set it on the right hip and "un-one and uh-two and uh-three." I second Richard--the drummers do whatever they need to do to be able to play. Who would have thought drummers would be the smart ones?

Naturally, you'll want to check with one of the places like Greasy Grooves about getting yourself a custom tartan pickguard for your bass.

It was very well received. There were some looks my way, but overall it was hugely positive. My wife told me that a group of women seated near her were all excited that there was a guy in a kilt. My singer's girlfriend inquired if I was Scottish..I told I was (am a Hamilton on my mother's side).

My next show is this coming Wednesday. The kilt will be there too!
