Personally, I think you may get more satisfaction from wearing the tartan of your own clan association.
Mine is Morrison, and while I have other kilts and love them all, the morrison is always special because it symbolises my family history.

Rob,
As you have narrowed the choice down to two, here is my suggests:
1) Buy them both.
2) Start with the Douglas and put the Maclean on the wish list.
I like your choice of the charcoal jacket.

Graham ,I already have two kilts in my clan tartan and at some point I will have one kilt in each of the various tartans, there are a few non-clan tartans that i really, really like and there is a special association with the Macleans (in my case at least) that makes this a difficult choice. Whichever one I order ,the other tartan is going on the top of the wish list.
Casey, the charcoal jacket really grew on me as I was trying to figure out what to get. As for the tartans I may order a swatch of each and see what that does for me. For now I think all thisd deep thinking calls for more whisky.

Rob,
When we started getting PV in stock, MacLean Hntg was my first kilt I made for myself. It's still a favorite! Pleat it to the sett, not regimental (NOT the stripe).
A GREAT reason to go with MacLean Hntg... It's Versatile. It looks equally great with a black (or white) T Shirt (I prefer my Johnny Cash shirt with him flipping off the camera) OR a dress shirt, solid tie and kilt jacket. You can dress UP or DOWN very easily in this tartan. I would HIGHLY reccomend. You can not go wrong.

I have decide that I'm going to get the ancient Douglas tartan. Along with fly plaid, charcoal grey argyl jacket, etc. The next wool kilt after thst will be the Maclean Hunting.
Thanks to all who responded and gave their thoughts. Every little bt of info helped.
Rocky, I enjoy Johnny Cash, one of the few young un's in the area who does,. I have a black t-shirt I found at Wal-mart that says black shhep on it and as an outline of a sheep in white. Goes great with the kilt, both tartan and Victory.
So next week I get measured for my argyll jacket and after labor day I place my order and the extremely terrible waiting begins.

In case I've missed it, who is the lucky kiltmaker?

Blu, for my traditional wool kilts I deal with a store in Salem Oregon, The Kilt and Thistle. They were extremely helpful when I took my first steps into being kilted and with my measurements their prices are within 20$ us what I would pay if ordering from other sources. Everything I have ordered through them has been of extremely high quality. Between them and the various resources listed on this site, I have yet have a bad or dissapointing kilt related purchase.
