So any ideas where to meet up? I will have a car while I am there, training lets out before 5 pm so I can do most anything past that though. I'm looking to get a feel for the area as it may be on the radar for a move in a few years...
Perhaps somewhere I can get a taste of the south?
(And a fine local beer as well)
Assuming the nights aren't scorching I may bring the wool kilt and assorted casual kit..
Having spent 15 years in Phoenix I'm no stranger to stupid hot weather.

I'm relatively new to Atlanta (4 years now), and I haven't really noticed an Atlanta cuisine. Did you have a certain style of food in mind for a taste of the south?

Not really, I'm just looking for good local vittles and good local beer, figured there has to be some sort of local style there right? when people come here to visit Chicago They want Chicago-style deep dish pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, and Chicago dogs....
Anything unique or interesting?

Well, there is always chicken and waffles at Gladys Knight's...but not sure they serve beer. If food is more important, then I would suggest something like above, The Varsity (fairly famous for hamburgers, etc), BBQ (pork) is definitely a southern thing and there are acouple of good local places. If beer is more important, then I would suggest one of @Wareyin and my favorites Taco Mac where you can get the local brews (we have quite a few in the area and most also have tours with sampling). The food is really good, it is better than your typical bar food and they have quite a few drafts on tap (depending on location, in the neighborhood of 70+). In addition, there are multiple locations around the Atlanta area and we can probably find one convenient to you and at least several of us locals. Looking forward to meeting!

I have a feeling Gladys Knight's is more about her than the food. A Varsity naked dog walking, with a frosted orange
and fries or onion rings is a bit of local color, but that time of day problematic traffic wise. A couple of the more
traditionally top BBQ places have closed as the next generation didn't want to be working in the business they grew
up in and I'm no expert on current favorites. Taco Mac Douglasville would be 15 or 20 minutes from the motel, about an hour+ from me and from Creag. TMac Cumberland should be about the midpoint. Probably (it is Atlanta, it is 285) about a half hour from motel. Where is training? Can you wear kilt to training, or need to get back some distance to motel to change? Of course, being a non-drinking vegetarian, all irrelevant to me, though TMac does have a nice black bean burger.
Traffic is going to be the major factor. From Dallas/Marietta to Sweetwater not awful, much worse from Lithia Springs or
north of Perimeter and east. TMac Cumberland seems the most workable. That time of day, you can spend an hour getting from Six Flags to downtown, calms down some after 7:00- 7:30. Downtown Connector crawling either direction.
Of course, I've been parked on the Downtown Connector at three in the morning with no explanation. It's Atlanta.
Nothing binding, just some thoughts.

Neither The Varsity or Gladys Knight's serve beer. I haven't been to either, so can't comment on their food.

Training is at Mitsubisi motors right by the hotel, no kilts though, strict shop wear required, I have to bring my uniforms from the dealership I work at, going to flip their wigs when they see me stroll in wearing Subaru uniforms...
Going to be interesting

5 Seasons Brewing Company at the Prado is another option. Local brewpub.
