Which begs the question: What tartan do THEY wear?

If there were tartan police, they would be going after the kiltmakers that have no clue what they're recommending to some people. Some company pushes a "Dress" tartan on me and I'm suing!

Jimmy -- there actually IS an Arkansas state tartan now -- an aquaintance of mine in one of the Scottish organisations I belong to helped design it, and she sent me a tie in it. It is a nice-looking tartan.

My wife wants my first tartan kilt to be a California Tartan:

    http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...rtan=By+Tartan

    Looks good.

I'm thinking a lined Pittsburgh kilt in California tartan and a Bear in Ramsay. I like the Angus&Mearns, Blue Htg, and the Dalhousie. Hmmm... one of each?

I think they sell beans in bulk at Costco...

    Jimmy,

I was just rereading your original post and made an interesting connection. When I wear a sporran, to hold my wallet, coin and other small items, I have it on my hip, as I find the front position not the best for movement. It seems the natural thing to do.

    Function over form.

I have been looking for a belt bag that is affordable, yet celtic(?).

The Tartan Web has some nice period ones, but I would have to remortgage the house to afford them.

Rigged, I'm also considering a kilt in the California state tartan (born 'n raised). The NYC tartan is similar and pretty cool too (lived there 5 years).

I guess that's another example of picking a tartan based on personal preference. Another example is that my sister (who is technically my half-sister), would like me to wear some of the tartans from her side of the family: Sinclair, Keith, & MacMillan.

I must say, I'm quite proud of the way that you guys are taking the information and making some GREAT decisions! The California Tartan is a cool idea, if you can find it!

The know your tartan, pleating, and "wearability" threads are all merging to form some interesting conversation in your kilt choices! It tells a load about you guys, and your personalities.

It's more interesting than most of the other talk!

My teachers use to say I was a fine upstanding young man and then I developed a personality and it was all down hill afterthat . I wonder what some of them would think of my kilts?

    California Tartan

The CA tartan is based on the Muir Tartan, in honour of John Muir. The Sierra Club has a nice write-up about it on their web site:

    http://www.sierraclub.org/john_muir_exhibit/

You'll have to hunt under the "biography", and then under the "Scotland -- Muir's Birthplace" links.

I wanted to see if the National Park Service would "adopt" the Muir Tartan for all Park Rangers to wear, but I never got anywhere with it.

District Tartans are my favourite tartans, even more so than clan tartans.

    Cheers!

    T.

Thanks for the great info, episcopalscot, makes me want to wear the tartan even more.

I looked up both tartans, and they're almost the same, but they added a thin blue stripe to the California tartan

    here's the Muir/More tartan
    http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...txtTartan=muir
and here's the california state tartan, awaiting approval (fourth tartan down)
