Personally, I always figured those attitudes were natures way of protecting us from the disagreeable people who possessed them. Kind of like the bright colors af a coral snake or the rattle of a diamond back. Pity it has to affect the son by keeping him from a positive influence and role model. There's always hope that the mom can learn and change her attitude though.
