9 yards is a lot for any kilt. The expression "the full nine yards" is a First World War expression relating to ammunition. I know you didn't mention that, but I bring it up as it is a common misconception that it relates to kilts. 8 yards (7.4m) is plenty for most.
Absoutely. i have a couple of high yardage PV kilts. Because of my shape, the weight at the back of the kilt tends to make them sag at the back, creating a reverse slope effect. I don't have as much of a problem with my wool kilt which is lighter overall, but a lower yardage knife or box pleat certainly produces a better balance. I suggest you wait to see how you get on with the first one before malking a final decision as body shape can have a significant effect on what is or is not comfortable.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!
