I used to feel the same Hamish, the English aren't big on hats, but I do like my Akubra, more so after today. I've spent most of the morning in pelting rain and my hat has kept my head neck and shoulders mostly dry.
It's moved from optional extra to essential piece of kit, alongside my kilts

Hi Hamish, pleased to "meet" you.
Here in Indiana, we can go from lower 100°'s in the summer to wind chills of MINUS 25° in the winter. And I ain't a'gonna wear no hats!
If I am wearing a hooded coat in really cold temperatures, I ~might~ put the hood up, but a hat? NO way!
I can still recall my mother chastising me for ripping the caps off my head when I thought I was out of her sight. (Guess I wasn't, huh? ) Winter coats usually have two pockets - one for your gloves and one to stash the cap into, so you don't have to wear the silly thing...
Peace,
Mike

Wow! You guys are speaking Greek to me. I've never even heard of some of the styles of hats mentioned. I'll have to start some investigating. Some I've never heard:
porkpie
scally
balmoral
diced glengarry
kangols

Hamish,
I was looking at your gallery and I think that with some of your outfits you'd look quite striking in a Tilly or Australian Bush Hat (Akubra) with a side upturned.
I love hats though and have an interesting variety of them.
But my father was like you. He never wore hats during my upbringing. I think he last wore a hat in the days of the Zoot Suit. He thinks of hats as dressing down an outfit.
I think they can add a bit of panache, as well as being practical in some situations.

I honestly prefer to have my hair blowing in the wind,
Colin, just be thankful that you HAVE the hair to blow about.
Rhino, how's is going with the Akubra? (Brian -it's the 'Aussie' hat)
Are you more comfy wearing it now?
I wear one in summer to keep the sun off my head, otherwise 'what you see (in my photo) is what you get'

I love the Red Wings too. They are the best thing to eat with your beer when watching the Canucks in action!

Glen,
My wife absolutely HATES the Avalanche...don't ask me why, it's a Florida Panthers thing...I, on the other hand, prefer the Canucks! 8)
Hopefully they will get this mess worked out soon and get back on the ice!!
Cheers,
T.
