Is it perhaps that the definition of Tweed is getting in the way?

Tweed is defined by Merriam Webster as -

    - a rough woolen fabric made usually in twill weaves and used especially for suits and coats -

Tweed is commonly found with flecks of multi-colors mixed in.

And a Tweed Tartan fabric. This fabric is kilt quality and retails for about $70.00 per linear yard. (4 linear yards of this fabric is needed to create an 8 yard kilt.)

Spot On, Steve. I have absolutely loved tweed from the moment I first laid eyes on the stuff as an adolescent, and am especially fond the of the colourful, heavily slubbed Donegal types, and if I do resort to bespoke that will likely be my choice, or maybe a chequered herringbone. Either way, I would get a LOT of mileage from a tweed kilt, especially since I love to wear kilts for weekend/casual/sport occasions, so I if must go the custom route, so be it.

Tweed.... It can be a unicorn. I have one kilt and two bespoke jacket/waistcoat. One is Harris and one Marton. Both were worth the saving and wait.
If you are in Scotland, you might find one in a second hand shop.
In the states? Not to be sarcastic, but good luck.

Seriously...look at tweed sites, find the perfect tweed. I use Celtic Croft as my outfitter, but I'm sure Rocky or others will fit the bill as well.
Talk to them, and then develop a savings plan.
Tweed will not happen on the cheap.

    Edited to add:
If you want a "suit" order all pieces together. You can find a pic of my suit here. It exemplifies the wisdom of ordering all at the same time.
If you notice there is a slight difference between the jacket/waistcoat and the kilt.
Same color number, different dye lots.
I like the slight difference, but you should know.
(My outfitter mentioned that I could get a kilt to match my jacket set about a week later, I said "Do it!". And he did..)

THE TWEED KILT UNICORN HAS BEEN SNARED! "Seek And Ye Shall Find"--Provided you're in the right place at the right time, which in my case happened to be at today's Scottish Festival And Highland Games here in suburban Chicago. One of the vendors, Highland Kilt LLC, offered Men's AND Women's 100% Wool herringbone tweed kilts and kilted skirts in heather grey and heather brown--with matching waistcoats, no less! I went with the brown, and it set me back BARELY $160.00, including VAT.

    Nice Find!

    Nice kilt!

Please show us a pic of you wearing it, I am considering another tweed kilt, but am not sure if they would ship to the UK...

Went to their site and didn't see it. Maybe it's under the solid colors under the tartans? I didn't see tweed as a separate item kilt.

Let us know your impressions of the kilt after you had time to examine and wear it. These appear to be Sialkot, Pakistan made, and it will be interesting to hear your longer term evaluation of their take on a tweed kilt.
