My father's favourite flask filler was Foxblood. He took it on most fishing trips. I remember him allowing me to sip it as a small boy and I thought it was horrible. I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this thread. I will have to try it again. Perhaps my taste buds have matured since my last sip over 50 years ago.

Hmmmmm...
I may have to give this a whirl. I'm a bartender and have freedom to create and feature my own drinks. My regulars seem to look to me for stuff like this. I could see making a version that's cedar or oak smoked under a glass bell. Maybe for St. Andrews Day.

I'm assuming you serve this neat and room temp, correct? Sounds like an interesting drink, I'm eager to try it now!

Neat and "field" temperature! A few sources I found mentioned it would be "served" from a flask whilst out in the field hunting. I suppose the nature of the serving would vary with the nature of the hunting party.

Well I mixed some in a flask last weekend for a day "afield" with my dog and a good friend. I mixed three parts port to one part brandy. I am happy to report it is quite pleasant in that environment. It is not too harsh but strong enough to feel warming (although this is a myth, alcohol is actual very bad for hypothermia). I should have known my "old man" would have this figured out

I had my first taste yesterday! I used Sandeman tawny and Hennessy - it seems I prefer a 1:1 mix.

"Room'" temperature, in this case just about freezing, is traditional when the “mixture”is served “neat” during the participation of traditional country pursuits in the autumn, winter and early spring months of the UK.

Thank you Tobus, yes the case is very handy for carting the gear about. There should be some better pictures of it and a more in depth chat about flask fillers in a past thread called, I think, “ Show Us Your Flasks” in the kilt accessories section that was around about two years ago.
