As I said, it was a few years ago. '08 or '09 perhaps. Things may have changed. Perhaps the overall outfit did stay within the intent of the dress code. As I remember the person was asked to post a photo of his outfit and never responded.

Given the way that some people look, when they play golf (our area), a kilt would be formal attire. I meant nothing by my post, other that to see what their dress code was. Really, just personal curiosity. Sadly, the few remaining 'old dinner houses' seem to have dropped their dress codes.

08 and 09 is still quiet recent and in the times when people were supposed to be mire enlightened. Does seem bizarre to turn them away for wearing a kilt...did this get more publicity at the time? What were they wearing with their kilt?

Just had a quick google and a fee people have said they have played golf at St Andrews in a kilt without issue, there is however an article from the Scotsman (sadly can't read it properly due to a browser issue) about someone going to Royal Troon & being told they were improperly dressed despite having been welcomed at many other courses all over Scotland including St Andrews. He was an American of Scottish descent so maybe there was some sort of negativereaction due to that as there are the occasional Scots who take umberage to anyone not born in Scotland wearing the kilt regardless of generations or linage?....

Just been able to read the full article & it appears that 5he kilt was penalised under the shorts rule as "men are not allowed to have bare legs on the course"... In this day and age where golf clubs risk litigation (quiet rightly) for refusing female members it seems that they haven't figured out that not allowing "bare legs" for male members is a form of gender discriminatiom if they allow women to have them....

Of course sometimes what happens is that rules are there to maintain a certain standard, but some people misinterp them in ways never intended that allow them to use a personal umberage to exclude someone...

Not sure what the outcome was in the end...
