Personally he looks like abag of.... So I wouldn't say 'some can make it work' it just screams scruffy schoolboy no matter the age of the wearer. I would say if it's hot enough not to wear hose properly then wear none with sandles, or barefoot which is probably more prototypical of none hosed highland wear.
I have pulled off kilt with trainers with hose and a yellow athletics vest worn properly for a New Years Day fell race but that was for a reason and the trainers largely matched the socks.... I think I look less of a bag of... than the example posted above, and I'd just ran up a mountain, back down again, through peat bogs and a river - I bet he hasn't really been cutting any wood...
Scrunching is juvenile.

You’re entitled to your opinion but I disagree

For me, kilt hose up.
Having (unfortunately) seen many try scrunched, I've never seen anyone look to me other than slovenly and
inappropriate. As I've pointed out in other posts, I'm grateful the universe doesn't run on my opinions; how,
then, would I learn anything?
And, too, the opinions of others inform me but do not govern me. If I want this right, I must accord it elsewhere.
Go for it, see how you feel about it.

Thanks
Thanks everyone for the feedback. It looks like kilt hose, worn up, is likely to be the best look. The kilt hose are cotton with a loose knit, so I'm not too worried about the heat.
