    canvas bags...

I remember seeing a photo from the First World War showing some Seaforth Highlanders (if I remember correctly) wearing either gas-mask bags or haversacks as sporrans in the trenches. As I remember, the bags were rectangular in shape, with a two-button flap. Obviously leather was not the best material to be using in the trenches, so this was a "field adaptation".

I think the photo is in the Osprey book about Scottish units in the First & Second World Wars -- I'll check tonight.

    Cheers,

    T.

    Just some thoughts.....
I have both the Green Camouflage and the Blue Denim sporrans from KiltStore.net, which I wear (curiously enough) with the superb Green Camouflage and Dark Blue Denim kilts I also had from them. Worn as a matching accessory, they look really good - as if one has taken trouble with one's appearance - but I've not tried wearing either with any other kilts.

They would certainly not look right with anything other than a plain kilt in a complimentary colour!

Those two sporrans are very well made. They are constructed in leather and are faced with the fabric only on the front surfaces. They are also very roomy since I can easily get my large wallet and coin purse in them - something I cannot do with any of my other sporrans!

As to the original question: I doubt if I could ever wear a canvas sporran with a tartan kilt, no matter how casually I might be dressed otherwise, but I imagine one might work well with a plain, contemporary kilt in another fabric ........... just as long as the kilt does not come with pockets (eg: Utilikilt)! Sporrans and pockets do NOT go together and look horrendous - one or the other is entirely superfluous! (IMHO )

McNice, I used to hunt and fish a great deal. I still fish now and then, usually for Walleye and rock bass.
