Alan, the SAFEST way to dry a kilt is with sweater racks. All they are is netting over a frame, and they're available at any department store with laundry stuff. You'll need to get two of them since the kilts are opened-up and pretty long.

This allows drying evenly on both sides, AND lets you situate the pleats in their proper place so that ironing is lessened... or not necessary. When is kilt is "hang-dried", the pleats can wander wherever there's no tension. Therefore, they dry in the position that they're hanging. Since kilts are tapered and NOT straight, this can affect the way the pleats lay when the kilt's worn.

The heavier the kilt... the better this works. Total expense is next to nothing considering you're protecting the integrity of the fabric.
