"A 'TANK' Is defined as an eight-yard, wool, hand-sewn, traditional kilt. ie., "It's built like a tank." (coined by Jimmy Carbomb c.2005)"

I still hate this term and refuse to use it.

I can’t say that I particularly like or dislike the term.

For me, the word Tank is equal to "all but elegant".
Thus i also reject using it, as a description of a 16+ Oz kilt...

In fairness to the originator of the term "Built like a tank" in 2005 he did not mention "elegance" in any form, he did though mention construction("built). "Elegance" and "built" are two words that do not necessarilly achieve the same thing. Although in kilt terms I think the term in question achieves both things in the end. A robust and elegant garment.

Nobody in Scotland would have a clue what the term means and would probably be rather offended by the explanation.

As a newcomer to both kilts and this forum, I had seen the term "tank" used in many posts without definition or expressions of concern. So, I assumed it was a commonly used term that captured exactly what Jock has described. After reading these posts, however, I shall never use the term again and would re-title the thread if I could ...

Oh well ...

I will continue to update this thread as the kilt is finished and arrives ... to be worn with the already finished jacket and waistcoat ... for anyone still interested.

I wouldn't worry about it my dear chap, life will go on just the same. I must admit I am also somewhat surprised at the reaction here to that little used word(tank) and its true its unknown in the wider kilt world. So its true its used occasionally on this website as are other terms such as THCD(Traditional Highland Civilian Dress) that are particular to this website.
