First, I don't wear pants, don't even own a pair other than those I wore on my wedding which I keep as a momento.
Secondly, the Kilt had the effect of making an impression on people. Despite the fact I had moved to the area, only 8 months before the primary, was outspent 4:1, and was 20 years younger than my opponent, I won 37.5% of the vote in the primary. A little more money and we could have won it.
My big theme was that I (and people in general, I believe) am tired of politicians who package themselves and reinvent themselves to get our votes rather than talking straight about the issue. I harkened back to Al Gore in 2000 hiring a consultant to tell him how to dress. I lost, but got nearly as many votes as candidates in other races who'd raised $5,000 in my district.

Elijah, I hope you don't give up on your political aspirations. The kilt is a great memory trigger. I bet if you run in the next election a large number of those who voted for you will remember 8)

I could not disagree with that. I hope you did not take my post as a denegrating comment. Obviously I would not have a problem with you wearing a kilt, I just know how we are percieved since it is not considered anything but eccentric in my parts and the comment you got about Nice Skirt in a negative tone might have been on others lips but not spoken. I only point out Elijah that your message must not be drowned out by your attire. But Rob is correct, you will be remembered as the "Kilted Canidate" and it can even "get" some votes for sure.
What office were you running for?

State Legislature. Let me say this, I had maybe a total of 3 negative reactions over the course of visiting 2200 and I can't count the number of positives I had.

Two or 3 years ago, I might have asked you about the "skirt thing" because I wasn't into kilts until last year, but I would have listened to you if you explained about the kilt and voted on the issues I am interested in, not against you for any other reason.
