I'd invest in a pair of wool kilt hose for the winter. It's definitely worth the $20 or so you pay for the warmth.
The Kilt Store has them for $15.10 for the X-Marks discount. With your black and Black Watch (it is Black Watch, isn't it?) kilts the black or charcoal hose would look great. (Of course they go up to $29.36 with shipping....)
Depending where you are in Maine you might be able to pop down to North Conway, NH, where the Scottish Lion shop is located, and you could pick up a pair of hose there too. They have black hose for $25.
Andrew.

Phew! You really had us worried there for a minute or two, Will.

I just asked my wife about the "cold" question... she remains absolutely certain that it's just a way of making conversation. My own belief is that there is a different frame of reference involved. For the most part, women's clothing tends to be made of lighter fabrics. I think they do feel the cold and think men in kilts should as well. Also, most women have no concept of the massive amount of fabric that's folded into a mans kilt. To them it's just another skirt. I'm convinced that the question is generally asked innocently. My answer is, "Not really, but I'm glad I'm wearing wool".

My wife said we'll see how comfortable I am in kilts come January and February. My respose was that, wrapped in 8 yards of wool, how could I be cold? She just grined and said "Updrafts".

I just got the cold question this afternoon. Was at a memorial celebration for a friend that managed to get sober but couldn't quit smoking. She made 67 and was a loss to the community.
Wore my forest AK which is a thicker material than most of my kilts, green kilt hose, brown wing tips, a bright yellow Hawaiian shirt with a sleeveless green sweater over it, and brown leather flight type jacket. ( had one supportive comment on the unusual combination of the Hawaiian shirt with kilt. Just explained it was my celebration shirt that I wore to my brother's funeral too).
So a lady who's been to dinner with me when I was kilted came over and asked, with apparent sincerity, "Aren't you cold?" It was windy and rainy outside.
She's enough of a friend that I pointed out a lady wearing a skirt and politely asked why she chose to ask me that question and not the lady in a skirt? She just said, "Oh."
It is so weird that women wear skirts in the winter and no one expresses concern for them, but when a man dons a kilt everyone thinks he's gonna catch his death of cold. Go figure...

I posted this before, but this thread seems like the perfect place to post it again. There's about 6" of snow already on the ground in this shot. Sorry for the poor quality of the photo...

Q: "Aren't you cold in that thing?"
A: "Naw, they're brass."

.....If we only got 6 inches here in Norway it would be a mild winter indeed
I'm often faced with several feet in the mornigs and Often have to wade up to my knees while clearing snow. Nothing will get me out of my snow scooter suit while clearing that lot.
However I'll try some walking around outside this year...Last year when my kilt was new I just walked from the car to the church, or to and from where we where going.
Andrews story does also bring the point of "Why do we always asume it's us " That people are refering to. If Andrew was in Trousers ,and this woman had made the same comment. He no doubt would just have replied "Yes it Is " or somthing (Or Checked his Zipper... Thats right lads remember thoose )
Anyway must Dash got snow to clear

It looks for sure that you will get to enjoy the kilts a lot more this winter than your bike. By the weay, Have you tried riding while kilted? If I was still riding, I don't think that I would, for safety reasons. They would just not offer any road rash protection in case of an accident.

I've only been out, other than highland games and festivals, but a couple of times while kilted so far. Now that it is getting cold, I will probably only even consider it when the temperatures are above 60 deg.F. Since I had chemo therapy, I have a lot of trouble wither either extreme in temperature (hot or cold) I guess the teatments left my old blood a bit thin.
