Kilt Do's and Don'ts

I've seen it work well, as documented here, here, and here (camera foreshortens the legs, so this kilted cowboy does not look like he did in person).

Now, I would have preferred to see some kilt hose sticking up from the boots, but I think he pulled it off for the occasion. I just noticed his casual kilt is box-pleated. Does anyone recognize the maker?

The event was in San Francisco. I wore my black UK mocker to lessons during the day, and no one noticed.

Aye, Robertson, and they seem to be across the world, but they are not 'traditional' footwear! Ghillie Brogues are something of a Victorian abomination (I think they look absolutely ghastly!) - the buckled shoe is much more correct from an historical viewpoint and is, to my mind, much more attractive.

Not a Utilikilt (snaps are wrong), I think it may be a Union Kilt from before they started using straps (I vaguely remember they had buttons similar to Utilikilts when they first started).

I'll repeat Hamish's words but in reference to wearing cowboy boots with a kilt: Absolutely ghastly. Even wearing wellies with a kilt couldn't be more horrific (but I can see that as necessary if you're outdoors working in the muck or rain).

I agree, Cowboy Boots, in my opinion look funny with uncovered legs, i.e. shorts, kilts, and the like. They look funny on many women in skirts, and dresses.
As has been said, Cowboy boots were designed for Riding Horses, as were Jeans.

Now I have no problem wearing Cowboy boots, hats etc. I do wear them! I grew up riding with my friends, and I like boots. A good pair well broken in are more comfortable than sneakers!

It is just my opinion that they just don't look right with kilts.

I like Hamish's opinion on GB's as well, they look more "Costume", for Dancers, Very "Formal" occasions (Dressing to the 9's) when it is expected, but it is not necessary for a formal look.

I love my boots, but only if they are covered by a good pair of jeans. To me it feels like wearing a sporran with pants. It's just not right.

They still don't look right to me either. Kind of like wearing Ghillies and jeans on the ranch

I love my boots, but only if they are covered by a good pair of jeans. To me it feels like wearing a sporran with pants. It's just not right.

I'm in the same boat on this. While I have worn cowboy boots at times in the past, and find them very comfortable, I don't see them as compatable with a kilt. Unless worn by a very shapely woman, they look very odd without jeans over them.

Your right about cowboy boots with cilts just don't look right, althought women in boots and skirts (usually) look good. I own three pairs of cowboy boots and I used to wear them all the time, but since I started wearing my cilt (almost) full time, I haven't worn them.

I'm with Pour1Malt, Mddock58, MacSimoin, bangkok kilt, and the others on this. I love my cowboy boots, they are hands down my favorite footwear on this planet...WITH A PAIR OF JEANS!

Country Western dancing? Very cool, very fun though it's been over a decade since I gone to a C/W dance. (Note to self must take lovely wife out dancing soon)
