I'm not hammering home the point but wanted to highlight that these chaps offer reasonably priced diced/tartan hose, which I believe are the House of Cheviot offering, should anyone be looking:

£89 and £99 before tax and shipping is pretty pricey in my currency. I suppose "reasonably priced" is a matter of perspective. I also have a pair of the J.Higgins diced hose. They are machine knit and the strands on the inside are loose. The hose look quite smart with my tartan but are extremely delicate. They come with a warning that reads,

"Caution: These are delicate knits. Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Machine washing will ruin them."

I'm amazed and impressed that Colin was able to get a used pair because I wouldn't think they'd stand up to two owners. I really baby mine, but don't think they will stand the test of time. When I have the funds, I'll invest in a pair of bespoke tartan hose to match my kilt, but that is going to cost a pretty penny, indeed. Either that, or the Almighty shall shine his grace upon me and the perfect pair will show up in the for sale section here or on ebay. (hint: MacDonald of Clanranald modern, size 8.5 or 42). Even on ebay they can be pricey. Celtic trading post is selling a used pair for close to $160 USD!

Imagine outside the kilting world, spending the cost of a mid range cell phone or small television on a pair of socks. Amazing really.

I do think the J. Higgins hose are great in the sense that someone who is already dropping a bundle on the rest of their regalia can wear the proper traditional looking hose for evening attire at a much more affordable price but if you go that route, handle them gingerly!

I wore a pair of J Higggins diced hose for my wedding last year and they're plenty sturdy for my purposes. I had to pull and yank them to get them up over my calves -which are 21" around, you can see how the pattern distorts horribly - and John Higgins emailed me personally when I ordered to warn me against ordering them since they would be too small. I was, of course, too pigheaded and ordered them anyway. They were good enough for me though, and still look as if they're brand new after a few wearings.

I have looked at those House of Cheviot hose but with small feet and short legs with thick calves, I went with the USA Kilts custom made diced hose.

A pair of vicuña socks will run you about a thousand smackeroos... a guy could have a lot of fun in Las Vegas with his socks off for that kind of money...

When you say cable pattern, I am assuming the rope pattern down the sided.

My $15 pair have that, but seems thin somehow. Kommando Kilts make it.

Hahaha! Precisely, Scott. My fully-fashioned Argyll style hose from Kenneth Short Hosiery were around $350. And of course, I'll have them for the rest of my life.

It was more the point that it is possible to get such hose for less than £100 rather than any comment on them being reasonably priced. From one perspective £100 for a pair of socks seems pretty outrageous but if you think of them as roughly 1/4 to 1/5 of your whole look it seems a lot more reasonable!

I'm also slightly late on the discussion about Kinoch Anderson and the particular work they carry out on their premises but I took a walk out there earlier in the year and took the following photo of their workshops which does seem to suggest that they carry out quite a bit of tailoring on site. Whether they have their own in house cutter in Leith is another question entirely and earlier posts seem to suggest that they rely on Dege & Skinner for this particular service.

Cool photo! I need to take a walk there as well, the next time I'm in Leith of course.
