Would that be national, cultural, or ethnic attire?

I'm thinking a new classification would be required: Biological attire

Re: Dress Codes
I just noticed the bola tie is the official Arizona neckwear, so I would consider wearing a black bola to an event with the invitation of "black tie or national attire"; even if it were black tie, o'natural or national attire...
Here is the trail I followed that ended in the official state document stating the bola is the state neckwear:
"Arizona State Symbols and Emblems - Complete list of Arizona state symbols including the state flag and state seal" at the Netstate site:
http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/az_symb.htm
Which provides a link to, "The Creation of The Bolo Tie," by Patrick McMurray.
http://patrick1.wrytestuff.com/swa225557.htm
However, a source listed at Netstate is, "Arizona Revised Statutes"
http://www.azleg.gov/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp
And the search turned up, "41-857. State neckwear"
http://www.azleg.gov/ars/41/00857.htm
What are you going to do about it?

Reason: Fixing spelling of "neckwear."

Congratulate you on digging into your roots! But, before we celebrate, do you have a bolo tie?
I have family in Saskatchewan who live on a buffalo ranch. My uncle wears a bolo tie for more formal events

You can wear your bola at my black tie affairs but don't try it with the THCD people...They'll reem you a new one. [ask me how I know?]

Re: Dress Codes
I will get one, or make one with a black silk ribbon or cord with silver tips and a silver buckle thing at the neck, or perhaps all black. A ribbon with no tips sounds nice, as well; the first bola was a hat band put around the neck with a silver buckle, going by the McMurray article.
Both of my grandfathers wore them, by the way.
Rondo, you're not an Arizona citizen, as far as I know, so you have no defense. You'll have to try to find out if Colorado has an official state neckwear.

Re: Dress Codes
To further muddy the waters, would official state attire qualify for national attire dress codes? Here in Texas we might get away with it since we were once our own country, but I don't know if Arizona folks have that excuse!

But bear/bare in mind that naturist pictures belong on a nudist website, not a kilted one!
Jock, it was interesting to see that you went where you were told to. I presume that it was at Sandhurst that you were told you would be a Grenadier.
I nearly didn’t get into my kilted regiment. When I first arrived in boot camp I was allocated to a very Afrikaans (and apartheid-oriented) regiment called Regiment Groot Karoo.
It was especially distasteful that it had undergone a change of name combined with a political “cleansing” – its predecessor, Die Middellandse Regiment, had been staunchly pro-Smuts (and anti-Nationalist). Most of its serving members, including its adjutant, Sir De Villiers Graaff Bt, went into the bag when Tobruk fell.
Fortunately when the allocations were adjusted, I found myself in First City. To this day I am not sure how that happened, but it was a great outfit.
Regards,
Mike
