Another young man was told to change out of his kilt at school yesterday or face in-school suspension. He was told he was trying to imitate my son. This young man and his mother signed the petition. They are of Irish decent. I have emailed the principle already. Here is the address. jrapp@usd259.net The school is in Wichita KS. The boy's name is Evan Osborn. Thought someone might want to know.

Sounds to me like it's time for a full scale rebellion. So much idiocy in the "heartland".

Why are these school officials so moronic?
Great at this rate, kilt-wearing will become the next hot button issue. I can see it now. All the close-minded fools will be jumping up, thumping their chests, and yelling that the wearing of kilts will spell the end of humanity as we know it. Televangelists will rail against us as horrible sinners who can only be cured if the TV audience sends the preacher all their money. And of course, Congress will create a blue-ribbon commission to study whether kilt-wearing is unAmerican.
Why are there so many close-minded and stupid people like these school officials.
I have to admit I wondered about some of my neighbors who home-school their children. I couldn't imagine that the kids were getting the same quality of education. But now I'm beginning to wonder if keeping our children out of the clutches of the obviously moronic school administrators isn't such a bad idea!
Woa, major rant there. I just am getting so worked up about this whole thing. Why should it matter at all in school what a student wears.
Plus, if the student in KS was really wearing it in support of Nathan, wouldn't that make it a protected act of free speech as a political statement?
I wish I had a ton of money and then outfit every willing young man in the midwest with a kilt and send him off to school dressed in it on the same day.

Way off-topic here... but quite often the winners of major scholastic competitions are home-schooled.

Exactly! That's why it must be squashed immediately. We can't have uncontrolled political statements in schools, that might lead to turning out students that actually think and act, instead of sheep trained to believe and do what they're told!
The main purpose of a public education system is not to educate, but is, rather, to create an obedient stable culture. Independent thought is frowned on, and strong independent thought is to be punished. These kids are pushing against a bureaucracy dedicated to uniformity, and, unless they can get an opposing bureaucracy in play (like the ACLU, much as I hate 'em), they're in for a rough haul... I'd bet Nathan's going to be "flagged" for the rest of his time in the local system, and this Evan Ogborn, if he stands his ground, will be too.

People forget that high school students do not have protected speach. Also because of the continueing attempts to enforce conformity on our society anything that stands out, whether it is worn properly or not, even if it is not offensive, is quashed.
The days of bread and circuses have returned.

GlassMan, I think it's due to fear of, and resistance to change. When I was in highschool, girls were required to wear dresses or skirts. Nylons were not even allowed - it was the bobby socks days. Boys could not wear jeans, they had to be slacks. It's the expectation of conformity and the perceived comfort level that comes with that conformity. Things change very slowly.
I'm very frustrated by this as well. However, it will take time and the constant challenging of those perceived norms in order to bring about change - one small victory at a time.

At the risk of being labled a traitor to the "cause"...there are some serious differences in this situation.
First, Nathan is an 18 year old,,near adult. Evan is a 12/13 year old. Vast difference in maturity level. Evan goes to middle school,,,with other 12/13 year olds. Human offspring that age are only partially civilised. It doesn't take much to send them off.
Second, Nathan tried to wear his to an extracurricular activity where it shouldn't have been an issue, and wouldn't have disrupted the learning enviroment. Evan tried to wear his to class,,,and given the nature of youngling humans (see above) it could have been a major disruption.
Third, Nathan asked prior permission,,,which McClard over ruled at the time of the event. (hope that vice principle told him to get stuffed). Evan didn't have any prior autorization.
Fourth, McClard was openly and publicly insulting, and then refused to make ammends or dicuss the issue. The principle in KC took the time to explain her decision, and was not insulting, as far as has been reported. Her assumption that Evan was mimicing Nathan, while mistaken, was logical and resonable.
So, based on the evidence at hand, I would have to side with the principle on this one. She has several hundred of these wee wild things to control and protect. That is a serious responsibility!! She made the best call she could, and it Was her call to make. Although I might have decided differently in her place, I don't know that school and it's situation. In her place, I might have done the same.
Short version, the resemblence between the two cases is more superficial than actual.....at least in my opinion.
