Re: An Open Question for 'Jock Scot' (and Scots)
Wow...27 pages to get to the point that we see that we are dealing with 2 completely different world views. Might as well be discussing nature vs. nurture or liberal vs. conservative.
For Jock and the other Scots, I like wearing the kilt, the fact that I have a distant connection to Scotland is a bonus...I'd wear the kilt regardless. To my American, Canadian, South African, Oz, and NZ cousins, wear your kilts for whatever reasons you have...no explanation necessary or required. Kilt up! Kilt on!

Re: An Open Question for 'Jock Scot' (and Scots)
My four penn'orth- I would say that in my humble opinion the Scots (plus the rest of the Brits and the Irish) don't seem as intent on tracing their family history as the Americans and Canadians do, to my mind it's obvious why- because the latter two are "new" countries. I was born and bred in Central England but I LOVE tracing my family history, possibly largely because my Scottish grandad was an orphan plus both my parents have now passed on.

I am not responding to the original post of this thread, the ranting of Jock Scot views or misunderstood comments.
I just want to enlighten MT4Runner on the use of the Norwegian Bunad.

Definitely not stopping at Scotland.
As for national dress, my Mom is looking at making a bunad, the national dress of Norwegian women, which is mostly worn for ceremonial purposes. The male counterpart to the bunad dress is seldom worn, even by men in Norway.
I have worn horns and furry boots on a Sons of Norway parade float, and have not yet worn a kilt in a parade. ;)
The word Bunad referes to both women and male Norwegian national costume. In the recent years bunad for men is becoming more and more popular though female bunad is still in the majority.
As to the subject to this thread I have a paralell example of Norwegian-Americans. but I will not elaborate on this as this has nothing to do with kilt or Scottish culture.
