It's the form. yup. I should be hitting 14, but I'm not. 30 reps? I like it. You're making me think. It's not a priority for Woodland but it should could be a priority for Santa Cruz.

Kettlebell swings will definitely help you get the "hip drive" activated in your WOB throws.
Work up to 50-75 KB swing reps. Break them down into sets of 10 to 25 reps as your skill/strength improves. You can even do them for time.

I've got a set of kettles-18, 26, 35, and 44-and I've used them regularly for various drills. Doing swings is one of my preferred ways to warm up the entire body. However, even though I've thought about incorporating serious, focused sets of swings, I have always put it off in favor of some other drill. I think it's time to really make it a priority. After the work a couple of days ago, I'm sensing glimmers of possibilities of potential success in this event.

OK, kettlebell swings...well, dumbell swings, go on the "Friday Gym time" routine that starts up after Woodland.

If you have kettlebells put them in. I think they simulate the WoB better.

I'd be doing these at the Uni gym....no kettlebells, I'm afraid.

Let's see...Wednesday was gym day and I did a moderate weight, comprehensive tune-up sort of workout - traps, squats, pulls, overhead press, pec deck, and interval work on the bike. Walked out feeling great.
Thursday my brother and I went caber hunting at Shaffer Park and found a downed eucalyptus that appears to be seasoned, straight, and long enough to get 3 cabers out of it in the 16-17' range. We will do the cutting on Sunday afternoon.
This evening Garrett and I hit Shaffer for a good hammer session that ended when we broke the handle. Then moved over to some follow up work on wob to see if anything took hold after the major wob session earlier this week. I'm actually excited to report that I seem to have started getting the whole butt drop and push thing. With a few more sessions to ingrain the new movement there may be hope for a decent showing at Woodland.
Looking forward to a Geezer Throwdown on Sunday afternoon at Shaffer.

Last Sunday I promised my daughter that I would go mountain biking with her "next Saturday" ... So this morning she interrupts my coffee and newspaper announcing that we were riding in 45 minutes. I didn't have a choice; and I had completely forgotten my promise. Off we went into the Forest of Nisene Marks, a small State Forest about ten minutes away. It's a great place to hike, ride, run, or just simply enjoy the redwoods. It's also where the epicenter of the 1989 earthquake is located. We rode about ten miles start to finish and despite the saddle soreness, I look forward to doing it again.

I rode my bike to work this morning, and every time I do it, I'm reminded of how good it is for my knees.

Great session yesterday afternoon with Garrett and Alan at Shaffer Park doing a final intense pre-Woodland workout. Good work on wfd and got a couple of tips that should make a real diffierence over the next few weeks. Reinforced some wob things and hit the stones pretty hard. I decided to forego the hammers because I was getting a bit tight from the earlier stuff.
Finished off with cutting a caber - 16'8" eucalyptus, needs to dry out but it should be a good stick.
