My theory on that is: People like to show off what they know, make themselves look intelligent. Also, people like to categorize things to make their lives makes sense.
So, by asking "do you play the bagpipes?" they're showing off that 1) they know that you're wearing a kilt and that it's a traditionally Scottish garment (hey, for us, that's no big deal to know, but for others it's trivia to know), and 2) they're trying understand why you wear it.
So, I like to respond with a plain "no." That usually confuses them, and they expect you to tell them why you're wearing the kilt. So, not telling them more makes them even more confused. And when they ask why you wear it, and you simply say "It's comfortable..." you can almost hear the whirring as their brains try to process this information.
Okay, maybe I'm a bastard sometimes, but I'm a kilted bastard!
Nothing wrong with being a bastard. Why, I am a professional bastard.
