I won't go into the reasons why (since it's idiotic) but the instructions for Casuals and Philabegs will have to wait until November 9th. At that time, there will be a website (that's already DONE) which will take you step-by-step in creating a Casual or Philabeg kilt. It goes from step-one of buying your material (complete with sources) right through to EASILY making a MACHINE SEWN kilt.

Even the most novice of sewing machine users will have no problem with it.

I've read and used Barb's book too. I love the thing, and have loaned it to a couple good friends so that they could "get rolling". It's a source that's out there NOW, and is quite exact in making one "hill" of a kilt.

For now, I've posted a thread on making a kilt that is merely a "pointer" to a couple sites that already exist. It's not a recommendation on the instructions, an endorsement of their wares, or anything other than an information base... period.

Come November, the site will be there for your free use, and is also in cooperation with three other kilt companies and two material mills. There will be no commercials for any of the sponsors, or even a mention of them. It's everyone's way to get more kilt-wearers, and let you have more enjoyment from designing and creating YOUR OWN kilt. There's nothing like wearing your hard-work on your... backside!

Got a source for snaps? I posted a thread elsewhere and only got 2 responses: Get them from (an online shop in) canada, or home depot (I'm going there later but I cant imagine they have snaps... doesnt make sense to me).

I'm making a kilt now, so far it looks GREAT... except I did all the pleats backwards... they point in the wrong direction. Live and learn huh? Making it from duc cloth from walmart, nice heavy 10oz stuff, for working in, as I wait for my UK workmans to arrive.

I bought Barb's book and it was some help, but to be honest, theres NOT much in there that helps with machine sewn casual kilts. Tips on how to pleat, and how to avoid curling of the apron, and how to taper it were all very helpful, but I didnt get much else out of it as far as CASUAL kilts go. If I ever get the materials and time to hand-sew a traditional... that book is gonna be worth its weight in gold

Thanks Jimmy... cant wait for the site... although I'll admit, by Nov 9th, I'll have finished this one, and likely 2 more (a cammo is next on my list, after that... maybe a lightweight AK-like kilt).

The HOME DEPOT probably won't have the snaps that you're looking for. They're not a stock item at all stores in the hardware section or the tool corral. Gee, how would I know that? It depends on the region that you live in as to the stock.

The best place is to find them is at a fabric store (like Hancock or Joanne's) or find a local luggage repair or leather repair shop. They have the snaps for purses, saddle bags and custom jacket repairs. WalMart USED to stock a set that required you to hammer the two pieces together... and it's useful if you have good aim!
