I just looked through all the hits for sporran on eBay; nothing came up. Oh well...

Well, are you vegan or vegetarian? I still think a very heavy wool felt would be a good alternative to leather...they sell quarter inch felt around here somewhere- it's sturdy as hell!

Vegetarian, but the more I think about it, I think I would really prefer canvas anyway. It's less authentic, but I'd be much more likely to wear it for everyday use rather than just to the faire.

Umm...no one's mentioned the cloth "sporrans" at AmeriKilts and Pittsburgh Kilts.

While they're made to clip on to their kilts you can also get follow the example of the (gag) leather beltkeepers with d rings on them and make something to support d rings from a belt. Or you could even hook them to a sporran strap (vegan material of course).

I'm pretty sure they'd sell their "sporrans" seperately. Jeff at PK sold me an extra "sporran" for $20. I like the contrasting look rather than the matching look with cloth "sporrans."

Not sure if they'd sell it that way but some folks are using the pockets off their Utilikilt Survival models as sporrans. They detatch and have four belt loops on the back for your vegan belt/sporran strap. Holds a lot and even looks a bit like a sporran.

So, there are some readymade options too.

If you want a non leather sporran, what about making one yourself.

Get hold of the book "So your going to wear the kilt" in there you'll find instructions and a pattern to make your own .I hand sewed my first sporran with a thing called "Awl for All" for hand sewing and repairs to canvas and such.

You'll just have to get some thick canvas or other material....Go on have a bash....it's great fun

I have made several custom sporrans in hemp and pleather/faux fur. I liked the hemp sporrans more because they are unique.

These are way cool. I'm sure that there are nice weaves that would be just about silky smooth, but there is a chance of still rubbing and scratching up the cloth of the kilt.

Perhaps a lining addded to the back of the maille sporran. Just buy a little extra of whatever you line it with (and you probably would want to line it) and weave it right into a couple of the edge links. If you use that weave Japanese 12-2 then you risk things like phone antennas, and keys poking out. Not bad usually, but it can be annoying if things get hung up. I would suggest simply scaling the ring size down some, but that would increase the cost. I would recommend a euro weave for the smoothness (really how smooth maille is usually depends on the cleanness of the cut and how even the closure is) and for its flexabilty.

A modification of this would make an excellent sporran. Perhaps use a weave that is not so square so that you can "round off" the bottom edges. Or you could "coif" it and hook together three triangles for the bottom half and amke the top half one sheet. Oh, and just to give you an idea about scale. Those are centimeters on the ruler. The inside diameter of each ring there is .059" or just under 1/16". Nothing is getting through that purse.

But somehow, the industrial pollutants created by the creation of all that steel or like metals, which causes global warming, spews out billions of tons of airborne particles, and kills uncounted numbers of wildlife as well as injuring people, somehow, the steel is acceptable and ok to use? Last I checked, a lot of metals are still coal fired for the carbon. And it leaves an obnoxious amount of mercury in our water, along with coal fired power plants. Yuck. Or how about the petrochemicals used to make pleather like substitutes? Each year the plastic industry dumps God only knows how much toxic sludge in to our waterways, lakes, and rivers, making us all sick.

So using metal and plastic is just fine, but killing a single critter is not.

Preach on, Brother Dread. I've always considered the leather industry, when it's done correctly, to be similar to the way the Plains Indians used bison - every bit was used and nothing was wasted.

Of course, that asssumes that you don't have companies throwing away the small bits of leather after skinning the cow just because the pieces aren't big enough to upholster a couch or what have you.

Sporrans make sense to me - they're smaller, use small pieces of leather, and that means using more of the cow.
