Having grown up in the Deep South, South Alabama as a matter of fact, where there was a strong Klan influence right on up through the 1960's and early 1970's, I can categorically say that I've never seen the members of the Klu Klux Klan referred to as anything but Klansmen.

While I obviously didn't grow up there, I'll add that to the best of my recollection I've never seen it confused in print, even going back to original 19th century documents. I'm sure I'd remember that. Keep in mind that the names and unique spelling have been copyrighted since the 1920's, at least.

I approached Clan Donald at the games this weekend. And based on my conversation, I think I am better suited as a Cameron. Actually, I think the rep I spoke with would prefer it.
Seems a bit silly that when a person gets interested in his ancestry, some feel the need to wet on the whole thing.
I really enjoyed the games, but the Clan Donald guy burned me up.
Or maybe I'll stay a GDI like I was in college.
That's my rant for the evening. More on the event in another thread.

I looked at the membership requirements for Clan Donald on their website, their membership requirements are horribly complicated. I have Mays (a sept of Clan Donald) on both sides of my family, they noted that only one in 75 Mays are elgible for membership. You would have to hire a professional genealogist to get through that maze. I thought this might be an easy way to go as my wife is of McDonald heritage. I must admit, it did turn me off.

I ended up joining the Clan Campbell Association as I also have Campbells on both sides of my family. The membership requirements are much simpler.

The longer one deals with this, the more it looks like the Scottish District Family Association is on the right track. They are not represented at very many of the Highland Games. At Stone Mountain, the clan must be an active recognized clan with a chief in order to be represented.
