Many thanks, everyone, for your kind comments, but I don't have the kilt yet so let's not be premature! Rest assured, there will be photos taken just as soon as I get the 'shoot' set up. I am due to collect the kilt two weeks today so the Sunday could be the 'shoot' day! I'll keep you posted.

Oh, and I have asked for the kilt to be pleated to the stripe - the one that Paul has singled out

Paul, the "pale blue stripe" you refer to is the only hint of colour in the tartan. Seeing it with all those other shades of grey it does look blue-ish, but on its own it is clearly another grey. I understand the weavers refer to it as 'Birch Grey' or 'Silver Birch Grey' - after the silver bark on the trees of the same name that are found all over Scotland.

    Quite an honour, well deserved!
Yes, Gray (if you'll pardon my familiarity!!!), with a tartan such as the Grey Thistle Dubh, one has as much freedom with colour choice, for shirts at least, as one does with a plain black kilt, if not more. From pastel shades to bold, jewel colours, all will work well - just as long as they are plain colours and not patterned. Of course, for more formal wear, a shirt in exactly the colour of the 'Birch Grey' stripe will be effective, especially as the kilt will be pleated to that stripe.

Oh, yes! There will be photos. You may depend upon it!

More than enough for 2 kilts or I could just use the bolt for a great kilt at the local renfairs and highland games.

The overall look is about the same as your material but the pattern repeats about every foot which is a bit more than other "tartans."

I'm thinking of calling it "Donnell of Louisiana."
    Sir Robert,

Could you post a picture or two? A Donnell in Pennsylvania is intrigued.
