Well that begs another question. What kind of sporran are you wearing? Is it a formal sporran or a day sporran?

I wear my sporran with the kilt because I need a pocket to hold my keys and other personal Items. Of all the sporrans that I have, I wear my Freelander or a plain brown day sporran most of the time.

If it's a dress sporran he's talking about, he's right. Wearing a T-shirt + combat boots + kilt + dress sporran... is about as out of place as wearing running shoes with a tuxedo.

No wonder everyone was staring at me at my brother's wedding... ;)
According to the book What's Under the Kilt, sporran is Gaelic for "nut sack," and was designed the way it was so that if you're pickpocketed, at least you'll enjoy it a bit.

Type of sporran
Hey Whiteraven Jr.,
I think what you must have is a "semi-dress" sporran, ie a sporran without a cantle (the metal half circle at the top of a dress sporran) with some fur and maybe some metal. I think the idea is that a day sporran will be very plain with no metal, as the sun reflecting off metal might scare way animals one is hunting. I think you could "get away" with wearing such a sporran anywhere. My first sporran was a semi-dress. I wore it to highland games, house parties and formal events.
Ideal it would be nice to have at least one of each day (say for highland games, etc), a semi-dress (for church, funerals and informal social gatherings) and dress (for formal evening social functions) sporrans. But they are alot of money. I don't think anyone (except that kilt dilettants) would give you too much grief for wearing a semi-dress with a formal outfit or to an outdoor function. Do what you can, most of us are glad your making the effort to wear a kilt.

Ebay is FULL of affordable sporrans. I have a black day sporran with tassles, a brown day sporran without tassles, a semi-dress sporran with fur and a full dress sporran with fur and cantle. I got them all on Ebay.
The dress sporran was less than $100 and the rest were cheaper, yet. The regimental brown day sporran cost me about $25, shipping included.
There are snobs who insist that you must spend too much in kilt shops. Don't listen to them.

atmospheric risks,...
I visited Glasgow last year and I bought my first and only kilt there ( a mainly black pattern, with little green and purple squares, as I'm not scottish, nor related with any clan at all) and I was sooo happy for it, that I simply got out of the shop wearing my kilt and the belt, as I considered the sporran not necessary ( I had my bag with me) and a litle expensive for a backpacker!. Luckily I found a second hand one at a flea market 2 hours later.
It was a really f... windy day over there!, I had to be all the way taking care of my dignity all along the main centre of Glasgow and thinking of Marilyn Monroe over the subway's air exit on that glorious movie icon!!!!
P.S.: First time addressing to you all here. Sorry for my poor english and greetings from a kilted Spaniard in Valencia!...mmm just one thing,... anybody knows some "official" tartan for absolutely non celtic spaniards?

Your English is perfectly fine...as to a Valencian tartan...oy! I'm sure that one of the members who's a true tartan scholar will undoubtedly come up with one, though...these guys never cease to amaze me.
best
