Supported the government in ALL uprisings. I was sorely disappointed as a young lad to learn this, as being a Jacobite seemed so much more romantic.
Some claim that if not for the Mackay's, the uprising in '45 would have been successful. The Mackay’s took Bonnie Prince Charlie’s gold, intended to be used to support the uprising with bribes and supplies, from a French ship raided in the Kyle of Tounge.
As we all know, because of this and a little battle on a Moore, poor old Bonnie Prince Charlie never did set foot on Scottish soil. I guess he should have listened to his father and waited a bit, he very well may have been able to generate the support needed to successfully assume the crown.... a very old story indeed in Scotland. Seems that at times the Scots are their own worst enemy.
