I think you hit the nail on the head here Colin.

I belong to another community that takes the concept of going regimental to its furthest possible extent, if you know what i mean. We run into the same situation there in that the younger folks are too hung up about their bodies to participate, whereas the older more mature folks have gotten past that BS and are more about relaxing & living free from unnecessary restrictions.

oh why is youth wasted on the young?!?!?!!?

edit: what a post to go samurai on... sheesh!!!

I get so easily confused zipping around - England, Scotland, then Ireland and the US (and home in Norway in between)

In the Sporran Clan we promote kilt wearing in Scotland and you'd be surpised how many Scotsmen have a kilt in their wardrobe and are simply looking for an excuse to wear it. In general people follow the herd so if it becomes the norm to wear the kilt to support Scotland at rugby 65,000 guys will don the kilt - and that is the case. If it is the norm to wear the kilt to a Scotland football match (and it is ) then another stadium will be kilted and when playing abroad 10,000 + will travel abroad to support the team kilted as they are proud of their country and national dress. The kilt is also the norm for black tie dinners, Burns Suppers, ceilidhs, Balls, parties and any occasion where a little dressing up is required/desired. The kilt has never been so popular as it is now in Scotland. The aim of the Sporran Clan is to convert this interest, and desire of guys to eagerly jump into a kilt given an excuse, into a desire to wear the kilt for more day to day activity - the office, the supermarket, the pub etc that is a big hurdle and to do that guys need to have the confidence that their mode of dress will be accepted. So we lead by example, and wear the kilt for these activities and as many activities as we can possibily undertake. If I had a £1 for everytime I wore the kilt and a guy comes up to me and says 'oh I see you are wearing your kilt, I wish I had thought of that - I would have worn mine' I'd be a millionaire. We are on the theshold of changing fashion and increasing kilt wearing to the extent that it is not just brought out for special occasions - but much work needs to be done. It is behoven of all kiltwearers to encourage others in a positive manner to wear the kilt and given them courage to wear it for regular activity - all members of x marks the scot based in Scotland should follow this example.

I agree Jamie, We still have our work ahead of us. Sometimes an undaunting task, but yes it is worth it when someone does say I wish I would have worn mine.

Indeed a global movement to get gents kilted.

    No Kilts in Scotland

Spot on, Kilted Pride. I already own three proper woollen Scottish kilts which I really ought to wear more often and have just bought a lightweight cotton/polyester "kilt" by Mercy which looks the part and which I will be able to wear on a hot summer day when I would otherwise have considered it too hot for a heavy kilt.

For the most part I agree with DaveDove and Colin, I am now a middle aged man that has worn the Kilt for over two decades but am now better able to afford the traditional tartan Kilts than I was when I first started, I am definately more at ease today than I was at first but it gets better. My wife and I decided to Kilt up last November and go to a great little Irish Pub in Seal Beach Ca. for dinner, which was GREAT, I have to say. After dinner, about 9:30 in the evening we decided to walk around the street and window shop and as we were walking down the sidewalk three lovely young college age colleens approached us and one stopped directly in front of me and said, "You're my hero" and at 52 years old that is wonderful to hear from one so young and pretty right in front of my better half. The Kilt is a wonderful article of mens attire.
