    Michael,

Here is something to consider. My Salitre kilt is a solid blue kilt with the flag as the apron.

Somehow I doubt the picture was flipped. Bubba ordered a kilt from King Kilts a while back and got it with the pleats going the wrong direction. The company responded that they were not aware that the plaets were supposed to go in any specific direction. I think the skirt was donated to charity.

As for a flag kilt, I would consider something like these:

    in either

    or for our Southern Neighbors:

But in reality would rather go for the Maple Leaf or Provincial tartans (for us Canucks) or one of the US or state tartans (for the Yanks).

Colin, you have it right, the pleats went the wrong direction and there was no reverse pleat. It went to a good cause. Elijah did offer to make it right, but since there wasn't that much money involved I didn't deem it worth shipping it back and making Andrea go through the headaches. It did work out well in the end, a single mom getting off assistance got it and was very happy with it. She was getting proper clothes for her new job. Andreas skill with sewing is top notch, I can't fault that a bit and the thing was very well made.

Here's a photo of a good looking "American" kilt based on the red, white & blue color scheme called, American National - another option for patriotic kilt wearers...

I believe the caption for this photo should be -

    "Real mannequins wear kilts!"

    Colin & Bubba

I was trying to give the maker the benefit of the doubt. I have seen that same fabric in stores, but most likely would not use it in a garment in large amounts. (maybe for the front of a vest at most)

Let's be serious, please. I've been taught that America is called this way because the maps used by Christopher Columbus were made by Americo Vespuccio, a italian geographer. Now a days, we know that before him there were already maps done by the chinese with the shape of America, and maybe Americo just copied those maps, but his name still lasts thanks to his friend Chris.

    Pardon, I'm gone off topic.
I know what Chinese map you're referring to. However, that was supposidly a 1700s copy of a much early map, so I don't put much stock in it.

That American flag kilt is ugly. Good intention, bad result.

The kilts other makers produce, are ideas that they tried, and what they produce is fine, but it may not suit my taste or yours, there is no need to be mean about it.
Mean? Moi? Did I even mention the selvage?

I'm just a perfectionist - I can't help it - it gives me more grief than it ever gives others - really.

I stay up all night working on things when I should say 'good enough' and leave it.

It is even worse when something has got a tradition to it. If you don't respect the tradition it can never be fine - yes adapt and redesign, enrich and improve - but start from the original and always make it as well and as true as possible. If the maker doesn't show respect, who will?

Did you know that when the tartans with the woven-in designs like those above first came out they were quite controversial because they weren't "traditional"?

I agree that the tartans look much better than the flag designs. It also comes off as childish (as well as loud)to me since I once made my DD a jumper (UK note: a dress with no sleeves designed to be worn over a blouse) with that same fabric (it's just poly/cotton) for wear to church or other occasions on patriotic holidays. And that was when she was a wee thing.

    Two great minds Michael,

Had just sent that suggestion to Utilikilts a few days ago, answer back was when we catch up.

My idea was similar. A UK Mocker with the narrow apron being like the union jack - blue with white stars, and the pleats alternating red and white.

NOT THE FLAG...a representation of the flag.

I had an Arizona Flag kilt made up by Jeff at Pittsburgh Kilts. Think my gallery is still down until Nigel comes back from some well deserved R&R to tinker with the broken server. There may be a pic on the PK website.

In my opinion, as long as its not a flag converted into a garment, no foul....particularly when the intent is postitive.

No one busted Aruzioli (?) of the U.S. Hockey Team after they beat the Soviets and he wore a flag like a stole over his shoulders....

I think a UK, made up like this would sell.

I don't doubt they were controversial. I would be suprised if they still weren't in a lot of traditional circles. I honestly could not see myself ever wearing one of these, but they are a better alternative to making a kilt look like a flag. To me there are just too many tartan that will do the same trick as a lot of solid colour or fashion kilts.
