My wife was very negative about it at first. But, after she was with me out in public, and saw that I got compliments from other people, or no reaction, she has accepted it. She has even told me that I look nice on occation. However she still does not understand why I would want so many kilts (14).

When I finally decided to buy a kilt (Stillwater) - my wife was puzzled and said "But where you gonna wear it?" I - being an eagle scout at an earlier point in my life was prepared with a great answer - "Uhhh... I dunno..." She smiled and said "You know I really don't care - if you want it get it."

The second kilt (Stillwater) was easier - and the answer to her question was obvious by then - where ever I want to wear them.

I just ordered a Semi-Traditional from Rocky, in one of her kin's tartans - which she LOVES. This time her comment was... "well, as long as you wear pants once in a while..."

At our house its evolution - not revolution :-)

When I was hesitating about getting my first kilt (a utilikilt) my partner just said "Why are you hesitating? If you want it, buy it." That was 5 kilts ago and he got me Kilt Hose, Freelander Sporran and an antique fly plaid brooch for Christmas. :-)

.....must decide which tartan to order next......

I first wore kilts 50 years ago, when I was 14 (and no longer growing quite so fast); my parents bought them and I was years away from meeting my wife. When she discovered that I owned a kilt, early in our courting, she was delighted. The first kilt-wearer she'd ever seen was her maternal grandfather. Just as I was raised knowing that being Grant was a major element of my identity, she was "raised Wallace". So it was sort of a non-issue; she asked me to wear my kilt at parties when we were meeting each other's friends, back ca 1970.

More recently, she made 6 kilts for our daughter's wedding.

Yeah, I'm a lucky bastard. I'm well aware of it.

Whe I first mentioned buying a kilt my wife asked me where I would wear it. Now she asks why I'm not wearing one if a choose not to.

Moosehead, When the good wife starts knitting, please let me know. I am very interested in a good pair of handknitted hose.

My wife was never really exposed to kilts personally until she met me. She and her family protested when I wanted to wear a kilt at our wedding. We reached a fair agreement. I would let her get her way on everything at the wedding, as long as I could decide just one thing. Guess what that one things was?

Of course, I went to Highland Games and such, and she accepted it because we were in crowds of other kilts. I was surprised when she help me pick out a UK to buy. I got it, she said I looked good in it. However...

I try to wear it as much as possible. At first she didn't want to be seen with me in public. She said she didn't want the attention. After a short while, she started asking: "You going to wear that again?" I think she was hoping that the "newness" would wear off; I would get it out of my system and go back to pants. She was deflated when I said I would wear kilts 24/7/365 if my job allowed it.

But she is getting used to it. Now she just rolls her eyes and grins when I reach for a kilt out of the closet.

And, Streetcar, I know exactly what you mean about the Catholic Guilt techniques.

My wife is neither for nor against, she is in more of an acceptance mode. Although she does say that she likes me to wear it. Not sure how she will feel when I increase my wardrobe. ??: ??:

Where there's a will, there's a way. I am Norwiegian and Scottish and I married a beautiful Mexican girl who was born and raised in East Los Angeles California. She hadn't had that much to do with white anglos until she entered the work force and went to work in a hospital in Pasadena, Cal. Her parents are from Mexico as well as most of her elder relatives. Now here's where it gets good. I wear a Kilt! Talk about culture shock.
When I first introduced her to Highland attire she said; "You can't wear that here!", I said, "Watch me" She told me that I couldn't wear it 'there', I said "Watch me". Now I wear it anywhere I want to, whenever I want to and no one raises an eyebrow and even my mother-in-law loves the kilt and loves to show off her "Highlander". There is no barrier that cannot be overcome with the kilt. Every culture knows what it is and only the pitiful creatures that "...live in that grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat" have any problem with it.
My wife did however convince me to wear a Tuxedo for the wedding since many of her relatives were coming from all over the place and meeting me for the first time. What could I say?

    Chris.
