Hi Heath,
Ditto. I see you claim Mason as one of yours, as do I. Mine trace back to Caithness and what I belive to be the Masons sept of Sinclair, although that connection between the two originated in the Lowlands when both Norman families hit the "highroad" compliments of David I.

i haven't gotten back that far with the mason side yet. i've just started gathering information. luckily, my uncle has supplied me with a LOT of info....to the tune of probably 50 pages worth! yes!
have you been able to find a tartan for mason? i have not. that is one that i would LOVE to have if there is indeed one available.

Hi Heath,
Mason is generally considered a sept of Clan Sinclair. The Massons or Masons having come over to Scotland with the Singklar/St Clairs or Sinclairs from the St. Clare-sur-Elle in Pont d'Eveque region of Normandy in the 1100s. Now whether names that are affiliated with a certain clan(s) actually had an alliance in each in every case is another story. I'm sure you have read in the many clan history books available just how variable names, affiliations and locations can be in Scottish history. There are many names and clans in different parts of Scotland with the exact same surname spelling and no affiliation or link with one another, as an example.
The bottom line is, if you don't know the exact location your family resided in, it's hard to nail down the specific family history of that surname branch with any certainty.
A lot of what we celebrate as Scots around the world today is a relatively recent, and homogenized tradition anyway, quite frankly. Clan tradition/dress/affiliations etc. weren't as cut and dry as we'd like to pigeon hole them today.
Anyway, sorry for the rant.....the Sinclair Tartan is likely what you should wear for the Mason name. Cheers cousin.
Michael.
