I see it as a very situational decision.
Since all my kilts are traditional height, I tuck in my shirts it the occasion is towards the dressy side. If a casual setting, I wear the shirt out.
I am not strict on buttons and tucking them in, unless the shirt buttons all the way to the bottom. I have a nice red Henley, with three buttons, that looks great untucked from my Black Stewart.
I like this photo of Ewan McGregor, and it does not appear his shirt is tucket in.

I agree, that pic shows how to do it wrong, but I think shirt length plays a role as well. I often do not tuck my shirt in, and I don't think it looks bad. I will snap a photo next time I do so, and I will let you make the decision if it looks okay or not.

So, how about both?
Here's a hot weather option dressy enough for the office in my rural area.
The t-shirt is tucked in, the Hawaiian shirt is untucked. With UK tan Mocker.

what style?
[QUOTE=bangkok kilt]Ok, I'm still pretty new to the kilt thing, so. . .
Is there any convention for tucking in your shirt? QUOTE]
Where are you going, and what are you wearing? I like riverkilts photo and that pretty much shows I wear mine. T-shirt under, over shirt out. If your going to a nice restaurant, or something not "formal" but not grunge either, I would wear the shirt in. Remember, a noble man is noble because he took it with the tip of his sword. Conventional wisdom is nothing more then someone else did it first, but I am not so sure that just because someone else did it first, it is the right way to do it.

Aye Jay,
One of the great joys of kilting is experimenting with looks. Who would have guessed that jean jackets look great with a lot of tartan kilts?
There are soooo many things to experiment with....have fun with....develop your own look with.
Why should women have all the fun with fashion and leave men with drab colors and staid looks.
