Is there a direct line betweent he Scottish Dirk and the Arkansas Toothpick?

I don't think there is a connection between the Scottish dirk and the Arkansas Toothpick:

I'll take the opportunity of this dirk-related thread to show you one of my other blades. It was made by Warren Halstead of somewhere in Massachusetts (I think). The hilt is brass, maple and antique ivory. Try to (legally) find real ivory for such a project these days! Fugettaboutit...!

Actually this thread has got me curious, so I've gone ahead and purchased a sgian dubh from this same e-bay seller.

Its a given that its crap (I actually own a quality hand carved, silver trimmed one that was made for me in Edinburgh). The question is at a total price of $7.52 including shipping, whether its bigger piece of crap than other plastic handled models that are sold for more money? Time will tell.

    Best regards,

Yeah, there are more expensive plastic handled dirks out there... which is a littel disturbing... unless it's high impact tactical grade stuff... which I doubt.

    Woodsheal:
That's a beautiful dirk... that's one of the handle designs I favour... as I believe it's one of the older styles.

Yep, mid-1600's. The knotwork carving began to show up later in that century. Scottish dirks are direct descendents of medieval ballock daggers, and this can readily be seen in these earlier versions....
